| Getting a good start in Greenville |
| 03.04.04 (7:47 pm) [edit] |
Well, I finally made it to Greenville, SC last weekend. Drew and I went for 2 spring series races. The general idea was to get in some good racing in good weather, get out of town, see somewhere new, and schmooz with someone named Hincapie.
So, we loaded up the Jetta with all our stuff and hit the road just at rush hour. After sitting on I-75 for what seemed like hours, I realized I forgot the directions to the hotel and the race the next morning. So, my secretary (aka Drew) called for directions and some phone numbers and took notes. We made it there at 1:30 am just in time for 5 hours sleep before getting up to ride to the Donaldson Center which I'm still unclear as to what that is.
Saturday's race was a 7 mile loop around some sort of airport with flat to rolling terrain. There were 83 starters in our cat 3 race, which to us seemed big. Nonetheless, it was very clean, fast and tons-o-fun. There was a break of 6-7 that finally established itslef after many failed attempts from others, including myself. I took something like 5th or 6th in the field sprint putting me in 13th for the end result.
After the ride back to the hotel, I realized the race was harder on me than I originally thought. I was tired, but my first real race had been good to me. To refuel from the day's exertions, Drew and I had Mexican food on Main St. We then had hoped for some coffee, but of all the places to eat and drink on Main, not one coffee shop was open! Unbelievable. However, it's a cool strip...Main St. Neat place to hang out. Anyway, later we had calzones/subs from a pizza joint with some relatives....and let's not forget the beer. Thanks to Heather's aunt and uncle for picking up the bill!
The next day we were once again off to Donaldson for a "circuit race" which felt more like a crit. The first word that comes to mind is "intense". These guys are already flying, and know how to corner, and believe it or not, they're all pretty friendly. I finished up a slightly less 14th Sunday after being beat to death by these speed demons from the south. Drew was caught up behind a crash which reminds me that 14th isn't so bad. It could always be worse.
After all the fun, it was, unfortunately, time to head home again. So, we loaded up again, and headed home with some high hopes, and good stories. It was definately a fun trip, and I look forward to our upcoming season.
Until next time...
